Prevention of infectious disease in the growing dog:

EASY AS 1 - 2 - 3

  1. Understanding what infectious diseases are and how pets are exposed - Infectious diseases are caused by microscopic organisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi that invade and multiply within your pet's body. Animals are exposed to such organisms via close contact with an infected animal. Sneezing, coughing, vomiting and diarrhea are just a few ways that the germs are spread.
  2. Understanding how your pet's immune system fights infectious diseases - When an animal is exposed to an infectious germ, the immune system is called upon to prevent infection by forming antibodies to fight off the invading organism. It is especially important that young animals or animals that have never been vaccinated receive the proper vaccination, in the proper intervals, to insure that they have the best possible opportunity to respond to these fatal organisms that may invade their system.
  3. Understanding what the vaccines prevent and the intervals of the canine and feline vaccination schedule:
Puppies 6 to 16 weeks:
6 to 8 weeks: DHPPC #1 (and Bordetella for dogs that may visit a groomer or boarding facility)
11 to 12 weeks: DHPPC #2 (and Lyme #1 for dogs that may visit an area heavily infested with ticks)
15 to 16 weeks: Adult DHLPPC and Rabies 1 year. (and a final Lyme booster for dogs that were vaccinated at their 11 to 12 week appointment.
Yearly:
DHLPPC, Bordetella, Lyme, Heartworm test, Intestinal parasite stool test
Rabies
Rabies 3 year vaccine will be given to pets after they have received their first initial rabies vaccine. Our doctors and staff will remind you every 3 years when your pets rabies vaccine is due.
Heartworm
** Heartworm test - If you keep your pet on heartworm prevention all year round and don't miss any pills, the heartworm test is performed every other year. For those that miss a pill, resume giving the pill right away and it is recommended to heartworm test 6 months after month the pill was missed.
